About Me
Heya! My name is Sarah Hill
I am a 29-year-old self-employed full-time artist working from my home studio and living in the beautiful Adelaide Hills.
My family have always been artistic, and arts and crafts has always been a big part of my life.
In 2018 I went to Adelaide College of the arts and completed a cert 4 in Visual Arts. This opened my eyes to the big wide world of professional arts and is where I finally found myself and discovered the direction in life I wanted to pursue. I majored in Sculpture in which I was introduced to resin, sculpting and made my first mould with roof and gutter silicone.
It blew my mind and ignited a new passion inside me with the endless possibilities of resin art (as I’m sure is why many resin artists fell in love with the medium as well). I proceeded to teach myself resin art, techniques, floral preservation and encapsulation. Beginning with simple keychains, coasters and ashtrays. The first 6 months basically was all experimentation, familiarising myself with the scope and limitations of the material, what can be added to it, making mistakes, best ways to minimise bubbles etc.
I started my own business shortly after and sold on Etsy and continued to develop my skills and knowledge. I quickly became limited to the standard moulds you could buy (4 years ago the mould options were much more limited than they are now), so I decided to make my own. Through a lot of research, trial and error my first ‘Best Seller’ glossy finish goddess silicone mould was born (which was kind of a big deal at the time as the only ones you could get were matte, bad quality and had to have a topcoat layer on, which is a pretty hard process to master on a 3D object). Other resin artists and creatives loved my body moulds and wanted them for themselves, so I started selling them. I taught myself everything 3D printing and 3D digital drawing and designing to ensure a professional silicone mould finish. I enjoyed the new challenges I faced with mould making as you must have the whole process planned, premeditated and inverse.
My business took off over the next few years with dozens of viral videos on Tiktok and Instagram Reels and I grew an international audience and customer base. I hired my sister Jessica to help out part time. I taught her ‘how to resin’ to take over the resin orders so I could focus on mould making.
I continued to release new moulds and create larger moulds for floral preservation artists that predominately preserve whole large floral arrangements from wedding bouquets, funerals and keep sakes. I outgrew the frustrating imitations and high fees from Etsy and decided to take on the huge challenge of building my own website which leads us to now. So thank you for reading my small business journey and I welcome you.
In my spare time you'll find me hiking in nature with my dog Lewis, fishing, snorkelling, collecting nature treasures like shells, moss and pretty rocks for crafting, gardening, hanging out with my husband, siblings, niece and nephew and my Harry bird.
You are probably here from social media- I hope I have inspired or impacted you in some way with your own resin and crafting dreams. Whether you resin, make candles, plaster, concrete, gypsum, jesmonite statues and homewares, craft for fun, gifts, for mental health or for your own small business. You are most welcome and would love to connect with you on Instagram @hillside_art_studio and share and promote your creations made with these moulds.
Feel free to sign up to our membership loyalty program where you accumulate points every order and will receive $5 off per $100 spent. Also be first in to see new moulds and product releases.
