There is no gemstone on earth that is as unique or mesmerising as an Australian opal. Opals range in colours from soft pastels to sandy reds, rich greens, vibrant teals, blacks, and blues. While the base colour, or body, may be static, it’s the flash of prismatic light known as play of colour that gives precious opal stones their distinctive quality. When light encounters the refraction grids within the opal stone, the light is broken down to its prismatic content and is reflected back.Australian sourced, these opal chips come from famous opal mines in Coober Pedy, Andamooka, White Cliffs and Lightning Ridge.

Opals Down Under on the Sunshine Coast source rough opal from these mines, cut and polish their own solid opals that they use to make their beautiful jewellery. These opal chips are the 'off cuts' from their high grade, quality opals that aren't cut and polished and made into jewellery there in their workshop and shop front.

Solid opal refers to stones consisting wholly of opal, 100% the “real thing”. In jewellery making, thin, but beautiful layers are sometimes made into doublets (with a supportive backing), or triplets (having a backing and a crystal dome over the top for protection).

These chips are off cuts from solid opal from the rough rock, of varying colours, brilliance and patterns. Care has been taken to sort through the opal chips to hand sort and remove the obvious pieces of rock but there may be some potch (colourless opal) pieces with thin veins of opal in a small portion of the chips.

Opal photography is by no means an exact science, and everybody has a different method, camera, conditions and experience when it comes to photographing opals. There’s no way to 100% accurately portray the beauty of a natural Australian opal on a computer screen, but we have tried to take photos and a short video to give you the best possible idea of what you are buying.

These opal chips will add a touch of quality to any resin piece or craft idea, jewellery or pendant.
